BUTTERMILK COOKIES

12 eggs
1-1/2 cups shortening
4 cups white sugar
1-1/2 cups butter or margarine
4 cups brown sugar
3 cups buttermilk
8 teaspoons baking soda
8 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon vanilla
flour to stiffen

Cream sugars, Crisco, and butter together. Add eggs and beat well. Add baking powder, baking soda, salt, vanilla and 4 cups flour. Alternate buttermilk and flour, stirring well after each addition. Add flour until very stiff. Place a portion of the dough on a well floured surface. Knead in enough flour so it can be rolled out to about 1/3 inch thick.
Cut with your favorite shaped cookie cutters and place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for about 12 minutes or until browned. Remove to cooling rack.
It will take about 3 hours to bake all the cookies. After they are cool, cover with powdered sugar icing.
This makes a very large amount of cookies.
