Whole Wheat Biscuits

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg
1/2 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter -- melted

In a bowl, combine flours, sugar, baking powder, cream of tartar, and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Beat egg and milk; stir into dry ingredients until a ball forms. Turn onto a floured surface, knead 5 - 6 times. Roll to 1/2-inch thickness; brush with butter. Cut with a 2-inch biscuit cutter. Place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 - 12 minutes or until golden brown.
